Lunar New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Lunar Calendar. Chinese people called the New Year the “Spring Festival” () and celebrate with family and friends for fifteen days. The Lunar New Year is a major holiday for the Chinese; this tradition is also embraced and commemorated by many of China's geographic neighbors. For example, people in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Korea, Tibet (where it is known as Losar), Mongolia, and Vietnam (as well as Japan, up until 1873), all celebrate Lunar New Year with their own cultural performances, rituals, and traditions.

Lunar New Year is also observed in other Asian countries with significant ethnic Chinese populations, such as Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Laos, just to name a few. Additionally, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations in Australia, Canada, and the United States. Since 2017 is the Year of the Rooster, you might see goat-themed stamps issued by the Australia Post, Canada Post, and US Postal Service. Within China, regional customs and traditions of festivity vary widely. People in Taiwan will celebrate from Lunar New Year's Eve through the first three days, January 27 to January 30, 2017.

You can explore the wonders of the Spring Festival right here in the San Marino community. The Chinese School of San Marino PTA proudly hosts the annual Chinese New Year Carnival from 10:00AM to 12:30PM on Saturday, January 28, 2017. Rain or shine, the Carnival will take place at Huntington Middle School, 1700 Huntington Drive, San Marino, 91108. The funds generated from this event will go towards the Chinese School of San Marino. The Chinese School offers Chinese-learning opportunities for both youth and adults in the San Gabriel Valley and San Fernando Valley.
